No one thinks their dog will bite, but the fact is, dog bites are the number one claim seen by home and rental insurance agents.

The winter holidays are a popular time for adding a new puppy or dog to the family.  Caring for a dog is a lot of responsibility, but owning a dog is also a liability.  Before you purchase a dog, call your insurance company to be sure that your homeowner’s or rental insurance includes dog-bite liability.  Also, before you get your heart set on a certain breed, be aware that some insurers will not provide coverage for the high risk breeds.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that 4.7 million Americans are bitten by dogs each year and that one in five of those bites will require medical attention.  Be sure to do your research and find a good breed for your family and living situation, and take the time to learn about canine behavior and invest in dog training.
